Orbit

Junior Studio 2

Duration: 15 Weeks

Design Brief

This cabinet will be a freestanding entryway display case. This will provide a place to display items of importance to the owner in an interesting way. The design will incorporate mid century modern and postmodern design elements. This piece will focus on luxury materials while still remaining fun and playful. If brought to a retail market it would be considered moderate to high end.

Initial Research

During my research phase I first chose to create a mood board of analogs that have a cohesive feeling that I wanted to replicate. I then went to find a market opportunity via pieces of furniture that already exist in the style that I wanted to work within. Knowing these Items helps me avoid recreating something that already exists.

Concept Refinement

During the refinement process I explored many different cabinet variations. Thanks to peir critique I settled into the direction as it had the most potential for “playfulness”.

Before beginning the construction of my final cabinet I created two models:

one at quarter scale (1) using bass wood and

one at full scale (2) using MDF and other materials.

Building Orbit required custom CNC machining as well as templates in order to aid in the final construction.

Final Design Direction

Orbit gets its name from the handle design. An inlayed piece of alluminum is used during the final construction. Also featured is a bubble window which helps add depth as well as a point of interest.
